Participating NGO – Lenana Slum Orphanage

LENANA SLUM ORPHANAGE

Started by a group of community residents on the outskirts of Nairobi, Kenya to help with the ever-growing number of orphans wandering the slumâ??s streets due to HIV mortalities.

They established a daily feeding program in January 2006 using a Kenyan developed and manufactured porridge-like substance specially designed to provide a balanced diet for HIV positive people.

The orphanage is organized very much after another local charity called "NYUMBANI"- a hospice of HIV positive orphans that also run an outreach program called LEA TOTO. The food program has made an immense difference, but the 60 children are still in need of several things, including: bathroom facilities, high school education – which must be paid for in Kenya, and food. There is also a need for anything to enhance learning or items that could be used to develop projects that could lead to income-generating activities.

For any questions regarding the project, please email Dana (dswilsons@gmail.com) or  Hanne (hannelorehoward@hotmail.com).

Latest news (October 2006) nearly all of the 14 children listed on the site up for adoption have received international foster parents! For those of you that want to support a child from the Lenana Slum Orphanage full details are on www.slumorphans.org. There will be a new list and images of more children within the next month.

What an effect £12 can make. With the money, educational toys were purchased in London and delivered into the hands of Kenyan orphans. With each visit, photos will be taken of the children playing with the gifts.

We all are connected, and though it may be becoming a popularized cliché, it still holds true. The items in the images below were given to the photographer while living abroad, and now have a permanent home. See if you become connected in the following weeks
